Welcome to Joan K. Mendel Elementary school (formerly known as Yokota East Elementary School): "A Great School in a Great Community" and home of Panda Pride. I am proud to return (2001) to Joan K. Mendel Elementary as principal. I served as assistant principal from 1993 - 1997. Mr. John Stroup is our assistant principal.
Our school improvement process will focus on Goal 1 Reading and Goal 2 Mathematics. Specifically, our goal in reading is to improve reading comprehension across the curriculum. The essence of that goal says that, “All students will read from a variety of genre, understand the meaning, improve vocabulary, and demonstrate personal and global connections to what they read.”
In mathematics our goal is that students will demonstrate growth in the use of mathematical processes and skills across the curriculum. The essence of that goal is that, “All students will be able to solve mathematical and real world problems, justify their solutions, and communicate their thinking.”
The Yokota community will be pleased to know that Yokota West Elementary and Joan K. Mendel Elementary share the same curriculum. Core offerings, special subjects, and special education programs are similar. Both schools will be working together to meet the educational challenges ahead. In this way teachers can share ideas and teaching practices that better support student achievement.
Joan K. Mendel Elementary School has a large playground. This provides our students with a play area that supports their health and physical education. Safety is a high priority at Joan K. Mendel ES and it is our intention that our students use and enjoy the equipment in a safe manner for all.
Parents and community members are always welcome to our school. Public support builds a great school and Joan K. Mendel ES prides itself on strong parent and community partnership.
